Nursery Trees or Spaded Trees: Which Transplants Better?

By Adam Ciboch

Whether you choose spaded trees or nursery trees, there are both positive and negative aspects to consider. Trees that are grown in nurseries are generally easier to transport because they have usually been subject to the process of root pruning. If the value of the tree exceeds the cost of transporting it or if it would otherwise be lost, transplanting with a tree spade may be more costly initially but can be ultimately successful.

Nursery trees have the advantage of being subjected to root pruning, which aids in the growth of the tree's most adaptable roots and contributes to the ultimate health and minimal stress for the tree. At the same time, moving and transplanting large trees from one location to another via a tree spade, saves labor, planting time and years of maintenance on a young tree. Mower damage, which sometimes occurs with smaller or younger trees, is usually avoided when a tree spade is utilized.

Denser root systems are a characteristic of trees grown in a nursery, but they are not as extensive as those root networks found in field-grown trees. Such trees are defined as those, which have lived under "nursery conditions" for a period of at least two years. To reduce the danger of injury to these types of trees, it is recommended that while transplanting them the ball-and-burlap method should be employed. Small trees, particularly respond well to this procedure as their root systems are generally well developed. Pruning should never be done in order for the tree to fit into a pre-designated hole as the roots must have room to develop.

When using a tree spade, many trees can be moved any time of the year as long as the ground is not frozen. Firs, maples, and spruce trees are best transplanted during the cooler months of spring and early fall. Commercial nurseries use tree spades to lift large trees out of the soil for retail sale or compact storage.

Trees that have been grown in nurseries or that have been moved from another location are often transplanted with the help of spades by arborists and landscape companies. Professionals create an "instant landscape" whenever they dig up large trees and transplant them from one area to another. There are many kinds of trees spades and anyone using them should understand the different types and sizes available and how they work as well as the area in which they will be used.
