Discover Information About Tape Measure

By Simon Miller

A tape measure and a ruler have similar functions but the difference is one can be collapsed and the other is rolled. These days, tape measure has progressed from cloth or ribbon tape to a modern method of getting an exact measurement referred to as a laser tape measure. Don't confuse yourself, because a laser tape measure doesn't use a tape. The measurement is shown on the instrument's LCD screen. It's proven to have the quickest readout and most accurate reading.

Aside from the evolution of the tape measure, many professionals prefer to use ribbon, fiberglass, plastic or metal tape with numerical measurements of inches or centimeters. While, carpentry and construction typically prefer to use tape made of metal, sometimes with a nylon or polyester film coating for added durability. These often come rolled in a plastic or metal case and can be extended or retracted. This type of tape often has a small metal bracket at the tip. This allows the end to be hooked over the edge of a board or other surface while measuring a long distance. Professional such as fashion designers, tailors and stream-stresses prefer to use the fiberglass or plastic tape because of its flexibility. They need a tape that can wrap around their customer's body.

There are custom made tapes offered to consumers such as newborn, braille, wrist, bra and livestock. Most tape measures have different numerical markings some are marked in inches or centimeters. Tailor tape measures have inches on one side and centimeter on the back. While other tailor tape have a standard tape is white on both sides, 59 " long by " wide, and has metal clips on each end. Many tailor tape measures offer yardage markings for common fabric lengths. Other tapes have significant measurements such as carpentry and contractor tape shows a black arrow for every twelve inches, and a red marking for every sixteen inches.

In order to fully understand the function of tape measures you need to know what it looks like. Just like any type of tools, tape measures come in different casing, size and numerical marking. Wider cases are much easier to read, since they have room for larger numbers. Carpentry tapes are offered in various lengths, ranging from about 12 feet to 35 feet. The casing for the majority of carpentry tape measures about 3 to 4 1/2 inches square, although some novelty tape measures are small enough to fit on a key chain. Tailor tape measures are usually 60 inches long, but also are available in other lengths.

As silly as it may sound, some carpenters, contractors and construction workers make use of a tape measure as a form of keychain. Some keychain tape measure designs are quite useful. It keeps the keys and helps the proprietor measure whenever needed. The sliding tape measure can allow you to determine length in inches or centimeters and it might extend up to three feet or even more depending on how large the keychain is.
