Know Your Enemies: Garden Weeds Identification

By Tom Doerr

Taking care of a garden and lawn can be rewarding, but there is one thing most people hate about it-those pesky weeds! Nobody likes to have the look of their nicely planted beds spoiled by these menaces. Knowing garden weeds identification and learning what encourages and inhibits them is useful knowledge to the gardening enthusiast and can be used to put an end to them.

There are basically two kinds; broadleaf and grassy. Of these two types, some are annual(living for a year) and others are perennial(living 2 years or more). Each has its own unique characteristics; if people can recognize some of the more common ones they will know how to attack them effectively.

Most people know the dandelion. Those bright yellow flowers that turn into white, fuzzy seeds set them apart. It is a broadleaf perennial that blooms in shady or sunny places alike. Its root system is strong and runs deep. They need to be dug up before they seed to prevent more from growing. Composting the area in autumn helps to thwart them as does applying a 3 inch layer of wood mulch.

A couple of examples of the grassy kind of weed include crabgrass and quackgrass. Crabgrass closely resembles ordinary grass but has thicker blades and is lighter in color. Quackgrass resembles wheat in structure, with slender blades attached to hollow stems. The former grows in clumps while the latter grows as individual stalks. These types need chemical eradication; crabgrass destroyer for crabgrass and an herbicide for quackgrass.

There is a broadleaf annual called chickweed that commonly crawls like an ivy across the surface of a bed until it chokes out all that grows there. It can be identified by its deep green plant with pointed leaves and white-star blossoms. An herbicide used in the spring and wood mulch can prevent it.

There are all kinds of weeds, these are just a few. A little self-education as to garden weeds identification can help keep this problem from ruining a lovely, well-tended garden.
