A Great Guide To Home Accessories

By Bill McNeil

Details say a lot about somebody. If you've ever watched a good detective movie you know that it's the little things that tell the most about a person's character. Your house should, of course, pertain to your likes and dislikes, and reflect your characteristics. But instead of going broke over decking out your house in finery, you can choose awesome home accessories without breaking the bank.

Take a step back. Examine your life and the style in which you live it. Maybe you spend a lot of time outside, or perhaps you entertain lots of guests. If you do, examine if they are loud and wild parties or if they're more simple events. The ages of your children will make a difference as well, especially if you have toddlers. All of these factors contribute to how you should set up your decor.

An artist chooses his color according to the story he's telling, and so should you. Telling the story of your domestic life should be a reflection of yourself and others living there. It's important to study the style of your house and ascertain what kind of styles would blend. For example, clashing Victorian furniture with modern art might not be the best idea. Make sure things blend together.

Among the most obvious accessories is color. Choose colors you like. If you're loud and have a sunny personality, maybe orange and blue appeal to you. Perhaps you tend to be more quiet and prefer leather to diamonds. Then maybe you should go for a softer color for your walls, like mint green and white, or green and brown. Colors set the mood and theme for a room, and often even affect people's physical mood as well.

Speaking of furniture, it's another important facet to keep in mind. Rolling, rounded and darker pieces reflect a more quiet lifestyle, To the contrary, other might prefer modern, sharper-edged pieces that reflect their brighter colors and more outgoing personalities. It's ultimately up to you how you choose.

Maybe don't want to spend a fortune on reinventing your house's look. Perhaps it's useful to see what little things you may do. If your kitchen is looking drab, instead of buying a new table, buy a new tablecloth with bright colors. Put flowers in vases around the house - fake ones if you would prefer to opt out of caring for real ones. Painting the trim of a house makes the entire edifice look fresh and new.

The possibilities are endless. The smallest things can brighten up an entire house, and at the same time, tell the story of you.
