Making A Statement With Your Home Office

By Daniel Akinson

Many people work in home offices in a variety of businesses. This can often pose some very unique decorating challenges.

It is rather difficult to find affordable and also attractive ways to decorate a room filled with unattractive computers, printers and office supplies. How will you set up storage, and what kind of furniture will best suit your particular needs?

If you are thinking about decorating or redecorating your home office, there are a few key things to consider first. The first items are important when thinking about any room in your home.

Where will your office be? Are you planning to use the whole room, or just one section of it? If you are going to try to make a living at home, most likely the whole room is going to be needed, if you have a spare room, that is.

If not, you will have to combine purposes in the room, such as creating a home office which can also double as a guest bedroom. You should also think about the kind of area in which you would like to work. Should you be partial to outdoor views or natural light, you should put your workplace in a location where there is a window which is readily accessible. Any location you select will need to be fitted with enough electrical sockets to plug in all your office equipment, plus a phone jack if a cell phone is not going to be enough for your business. You will want to avoid running wires and cords all over the house to set up your workstation.

Furniture The minimum you will need is a chair and a desk. You might also need a filing cabinet, printer stand or table, and bookshelves. If your space is small, be sure to double up in terms of your furniture's functionality. For example, you will not need a printer stand if you can place your printer on top of the desk, low filing cabinet, or top of a short bookshelf to save room.

Lighting Your Home Office In any work environment, having adequate lighting is critical. Of course, you will need a basic overhead light, but you may also need spot lighting on various areas such as a work table or by a chair.

Accessories. If your workspace is a part of your home, you will want to decorate it so that it blends in with the rest of the house. This is a change to express yourself and create a space that says something about you and your business, so don't waste your time with cookie-cutter pieces and boring art. Make sure you add your personality to your home office by including your favorite things in it, such as pretty framed prints, sports memorabilia, photos of the family or even your collection of dolls.

Storage in Your Home Office A home office needs many different supplies, from paperclips to file folders and ink cartridges. Think from outside the box, that plastic in-box, I mean. Instead, try baskets for your books, files and supplies. Look for furniture that can be refinished and re-purposed to suit your needs. An old bench can be repainted or stenciled and put to work as a printer stand or even a work chair. An armoire, purchased on sale at a great discount, will keep your office supplies out of sight and your filing cabinet looks great when you throw a magnificent tablecloth over it. Be imaginative with your accessories! For instance, mine are kept in a quaint coffee mug which I received as a gift one Christmas. You can keep your desk neat and organized, with everything in reach, yet still make your home office feel like home.
