Green Living: Simple Ways To Make It A Habit

By Emmanuel Azuma

Almost daily we are reminded by the media of the effects of pollution - which we have caused - and the direct result thereof, global warming. Lots of people want to help battle the threat but have very little idea what to do. Thankfully, there are many relatively simple ways to help out, without having to be a hero. Here is a short list of simple things you can do to help.

1. If possible, use your laptop computer, not a desktop. Most people use computers these days for a wide range of reasons. Given that laptop computers are fifty percent more energy efficient, always look to use a laptop instead of a standard desktop computer. Additionally, never mind being more affordable, laptops are light and compact and can be taken along to most places you go to.

2. Try not to drive, walk It's a terrible thing, but driving an automobile equals pollution. Vehicles are big polluters because they burn fuel, causing toxic gases to be released into the air. Cars are used worldwide each and every day, so overall they release a lot of gases that are harmful to the environment. If we all made a point of walking instead of going by car just once a day, we'd effect a huge change for the better. However, you can't walk for every occasion but you should try to when there is opportunity to do so. Next time you want to the convenience store, rather walk. You'll get some exercise, save money, and bring down your personal tally of gas emissions.

3. Close the faucet while you brush your teeth A considerable amount of water squandered every day, just because we're so used to to having running water. Avoid wasting water the next time you brush your teeth, turn off the tap. Think of the amount of water down the drain if you brush your teeth for two minutes while you have the faucet turned on. What's better is to put some water for rinsing your mouth in a glass in advance, so you aren't wasting water.

4. Try taking quick showers instead of long baths Baths use up a lot more water and electricity than taking a shower, so it's better to have a shower instead of a bath. But then again, if you take long showers, you'll undo any good! If you are unable to make your shower brief, you'll end up wasting water anyway.

5. Don't leave lights on at all times Don't leave a light on in an empty room. If a room doesn't have anyone in it, what is the purpose of leaving a light switched on? Doing this is not just advantageous to the environment, but also to your wallet. And turn the lights off when it's sunny outside; you should have adequate natural light in your home.

These ways of living green are simple and inexpensive. As a matter of fact, they'll probably save you money. Let's go then, don't wait - our planet needs you!
