Throughout Hawaii, growing anthurium blossoms is a big industry. Anthuriums are cultivated on more than two hundred professional facilities. Some of these farms have been in existence since the 1950s, which was the decade that growers first started growing anthuriums commercially. Continue reading and I will describe the anthurium farming techniques these facilities use to cultivate massive amounts of anthurium blooms.
The initial step in growing these flowers commercially is building a shade building. The goal of the shade building is to provide shade to the plants which will be cultivated in it. The reason why shade is important to growing anthuriums is that these kinds of plants would have a tendency to get burned by the sun's rays if they were to be situated in direct sunlight. To construct a shade structure, the parcel on which it is going to be constructed will have to be graded and cleared with a bulldozer. After the property is flattened off, galvanized pipes are set in place. These pipes are used as columns to hold up the cables and shade cloth which are utilized to construct the shade structure.
Once the shade structure is completed, volcanic cinder or another cultivation material is distributed on the ground of the shade house using tractors. The cinder normally originates from volcanic cinder cones and is delivered to the facility in large dump trucks. Generally a layer of cinder about 2 feet thick is placed on the floor of the shade building.
When the cinder is in place, anthuriums are acquired. They can originate from top cuttings of older plants in other parts of the facility or they can be the result of vegetative propagation. They're then planted within the shade house.
Generally, Hawaii's consistent rain showers provide enough water for these plants. But, when the rain fall is insufficient the anthurium plants may be watered through sprinklers.
